The opening scene I chose was Split; a 2016 Universal pictures horror film directed by M. Night Shyamalan. The main characters include Anya Taylor-joy (Casey), Haley Lu Richardson (Claire), James Macavoy (Kevin) and Bettey Buckley (Dr Karen).
The genre is established near the end of the scene when Casey realises something is not right and a close up on her face is used as she turns around and realises a stranger got into their car, the lack of dialogue she has emphasises the shock she is in and forebodes that she knows something bad is going to happen drawing in the audience by creating tension and a scary thrill aspect. The tone of the opening scene is eery due to Casey's character positioning of her always being alone and quiet as if something is wrong with her which is backed up when what we assume her 'friends' are talking about her. We also are shown that something is up when a POV is used for Kevin as he goes up to the friend's dad as it gives a mysterious effect as we don't see his face or what he was doing, further drawing in the audience as we want to know what he was doing.
We are told the place by the fact that they speak in American accents telling us they are in America. The time is probably modern/ current time which is shown by their costumes and the setting such as the modern cars.
The target audience would be teenagers and young adults due to the fact that this a similar age to the characters so can put them selfs in their shoes, we know they are teenagers because they do not drive and costumes are very modern.
The characters introduced include Casey, Claire, Kevin, The Dad and Casey's other friend. We can assume from this scene that Casey is the main character as she has the most screen time and is presented as the 'odd one out' due to the fact that she is much Quiter and reserved making her stand out catching the audience's eye. Also, the fact that she is the last girl in the car who isn't attacked by Kevin. Casey's friends appear to be slightly 'fake' as they were talking about her behind her back and the character positioning of them sitting in the back of the car and her alone in the front show they don't really care about her. Kevin is presented as the 'bad guy' which could also tell the audience he has a prime part in the film. We know he is the 'bad guy' due to the fact he got into a car with girls he didn't know but also pepper sprayed them showing it was one of his indentation's and had a plan causing a lot of tension towards the audience as they know something bad is going to happen to them which is slowly built when the non-diegetic soundtrack starts playing as soon as he gets into the car.
From watching the opening scene we assume that Casey does not escape out of the car as he notices that she tries to pepper spray her but ends on a black screen leaving it on a cliff hanger, meaning the story line could go any way leaving it up to the audiences imagination to assume what happens. I would predict that she does not get out of the car as she is very timid so gets sprayed by the man, We know that the dad could not help defend them as Kevin did something to him before he got in the car hence the shot of the food dropped on the floor assuming Kevin killed him so the girls get taken away by Kevin.
In conclusion I think that the opening scene does a very good job in terms of drawing in the audience by causing a lot of tention and thrill but lacks in sticking to the genre of horror and leans more towards thriller unless the rest of the narrative has more of a horror aspect.
